Yoga Anatomy
is a great book to give to someone who wants to really get the most of their yoga practice.
It uses wonderfully detailed illustrations to show exactly what is happening to the body in each pose.
The information will suit both beginners and more advanced users and it's the sort of book that can be dipped into again and again.
Most people wouldn't read it cover to cover, its strength is in adding understanding and detail to each movement as you need it.
The book covers everything from how and why controlling her breathing is so important in each position, to an analysis of the spine, to an overview of the major yoga positions (or asanas), right through to a huge amount of detailed information on how each pose uses muscles and joints.
Back Care Basics:
Our Editor claims that yoga saved her back. And, goodness knows, we're all thankful for that as her front's pretty awful! (I do read this stuff you know! - Ed)
Oops! Anyway, the current thinking for the treatment of back pain is that it's better to be moving and exercising (gently) than lying still.
Naturally, she should be guided by her Doctor with this, and get the ok from them before starting anything, BUT assuming all is ok, then yoga is a fantastic choice for working on back pain.
Back Care Basics: A Doctor's Gentle Yoga Program for Back and Neck Pain Relief
has been described as a lifesaver for people suffering from chronic back pain.
It's definitely one of the best books you can get on the care and treatment of back pain, whether you are interested in yoga or not.
It offers a range of gentle exercises that are tailor made for each individual's situation. Combine this with a DVD on how to do the basic yoga poses, and she'll have a great chance of easing or even losing her back pain.
Ashtanga Yoga: The Practice Manual: An Illustrated Guide to Personal Practice
Ashtanga yoga can be quite vigorous and athletic.
It would suit the younger age groups for beginners. The over 40's may prefer to start with a Hatha yoga book.
This Ashtanga Yoga
book is a great introduction to the style. Perfect for beginners, but with enough variation and detail to challenge advanced users, too.
There are work-outs that take 15 mins, 30 mins or 45 mins so she'll always find time to fit in some yoga practice in her day.
The directions are clear and easy to follow.
Yoga For Beginners
This DVD is by Barbara Benagh who has been practicing and teaching yoga for around 35 years.
She also runs seminars on yoga all over the world and writes articles for the Yoga Journal magazine, so you can trust her to really know what she's doing.
This DVD is a great introduction to yoga and has enough variations offered for each pose to cater for those that have limited flexibility right through to those who are ready to push themselves to another level.
There are short workouts for those who either don't have the time or ability to cope with a full session.
The best part is that the woman you give this DVD to will be able to confidently practice more than just the basic yoga poses at home.
Power Yoga - Total Body Workout
Power yoga is a vigorous type of yoga designed to increase flexibility and give a real workout for weight loss.
This type of yoga is not for beginners, but it's been included here as it will make a great gift for a younger woman who has started yoga and may find the traditional poses aren't keeping her interested.
Or, you may be looking for a gift for an athletic woman whose sport of choice would benefit from improved flexibility and focus.
Rodney Yee has put together an excellent work out DVD and presents all the movements clearly.
